St. Anthony's Shrine, also known as St. Anthony's Church, is a revered Roman Catholic sanctuary located in Kochchikade, Kotahena, Colombo 13, Sri Lanka. Dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, our shrine stands as a national shrine and minor basilica within the Archdiocese of Colombo, serving as a beacon of faith, hope, and miracles for devotees from all walks of life. Nestled in the heart of Colombo, we welcome pilgrims, visitors, and the local community to experience the profound spiritual heritage that has endured for nearly two centuries.
The origins of St. Anthony's Shrine trace back to the early Dutch colonial era in the 17th century, a time when Catholicism faced persecution in Sri Lanka. Legend tells of Father Antonio, a Franciscan priest who disguised himself as a merchant to minister to the faithful in secret. Seeking refuge among the fishing community in Mutwal, he performed a miracle by planting a cross on the beach to halt the encroaching sea, leading to the conversion of many locals. In gratitude, the Dutch authorities granted land for a modest mud-brick chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, where Father Antonio is now buried.
Over the years, the shrine has grown significantly. The chapel was enlarged in 1806, and in 1822, a cherished statue of St. Anthony was brought from Goa, which remains a focal point on one of our altars today. Construction of the current Neoclassical-style church began in 1828 and was consecrated on June 1, 1834. Further expansions in 1938 added a chorister's gallery, side wings, a mission house, and meeting rooms, with the enhanced structure blessed on February 16, 1940. In 2010, to mark our 175th anniversary, the Sri Lankan government issued commemorative postal stamps, honoring our enduring legacy.
At the heart of our shrine lies a sacred relic—a tiny fragment of St. Anthony's tongue—preserved in a glass case alongside a statue of the saint at the entrance. This relic draws countless pilgrims seeking intercession for lost causes, healing, and guidance, embodying St. Anthony's reputation as the "Wonder Worker." As a place of inclusive worship, we open our doors to people of all faiths, fostering a spirit of unity and devotion. Our Tuesday novenas and special feasts attract throngs of believers, creating a vibrant atmosphere of prayer and community.
